Job scams target people who are eager to work. They often look professional and promise quick placement — then ask for money. Knowing the warning signs keeps you and your money safe.

Red flags

  • You are asked to pay for an interview, “registration”, medical or training to secure the job
  • Communication only through WhatsApp or a free email address
  • A job offer without any interview
  • Pressure to pay or decide immediately
  • Salary far above what the role normally pays
  • Requests for your PIN, passwords or M-Pesa codes

How to verify an employer

  1. 1

    Search the company

Look for an official website, physical address and reviews.

  2. 2

    Check the advert source

Genuine roles are usually also on the company’s site or reputable job boards.

  3. 3

    Call the organisation directly

Use contact details from the official website, not the advert.

  4. 4

    Never pay to get hired

Legitimate employers do not charge applicants for jobs.

If you have been scammed, report it to the police and your mobile money provider as soon as possible, and warn others.
